68 Ford Mustang Restoration Questions?

admin December 19th, 2009

marKo asked:

My dad and older brother bought a 68 Ford mustang in good condition , it runs, paint isnt too bad, interior is in good shape. The thing is they are too busy to work on it and just left it at my house. I am very limited to my knowledge of cars, but this one is a sweet ride and even though they are too busy i would like to get it lookin nice. Any suggestions on what i shuold do to the car( and no i cant really sell it, its not mine). I also want to get it raceworthy, so if yall ahve suggestions on that id appreciate it. Im already lookin to do a brake conversion so let me know.

Start with making an arrangement with your dad and brother on reimbursing you for anything you put into the car. Then inspect the car and take care of any mechanical issues first. Then start restoring cosmetic things that need repair. As you become familiar with the car and its components, you will be able to assess what you want to do to it. Start with mild performance modifications like converting to the disk brake front end, a free flowing exhaust, etc.

There are many, many sites magzines and clubs for info on mustangs. So your in luck! It’s a easy car to do compared to a less popular car like a AMX. I had only one suggestion, it would be to replace the fuel tank with a fuel cell. Early mustangs have the same trunk/ gas tank problem as the Pinto. If hit from the rear, the tank sends fuel into the passenger compartment. The design defect is due to the tank being part of the trunk floor. If you want to race, I’d do that upgrade as well as the brakes. Motors? You can stick just about anything in it. From a current 4.6 mod , a 5.0 EFI , 351W, to a big block. The other thing would be suspension! replace all rubber bushings.
